 Dvd Formats

The DVD platform is now the premier form of viewing video. Since DVD applications are used for far more than just feature film viewing there are many different forms of Dvd Formats to choose from. There are recordable and non-recordable disc to choose from and the decision on which one you choose will depend greatly upon what you are recording.

With the VHS tape being pushed out of the market the idea of a recordable DVD has become the only choice. With recordable DVD’s there are a few things you need to know.

Firstly is the disc to be used for multiple recordings or are you looking for a onetime recordable disc. People who like to record television shows, sporting events and even movies for future viewing, a rewritable DVD often referred to as a DVD-RW is the way to go.

This will allow you to use the disc several times over, allowing you to watch and then record over the existing data without lose of quality, as was the case with VHS tapes, which lost considerable video quality over many recording.

If you are looking to record something and hold on to it you will need a DVD-R. This will allow you to record once, after that you will be unable to record on that disc again. Perfect for home videos, pictures and in some cases music.

Other different Dvd formats include two sided DVD’s often known as dual layered DVD’s and for compiling large amounts of music a DVD-AR disc can be used. This is advantageous considering that a DVD can store up to 4.7 gigs of data as opposed to the 700 to 800mb a normal CD –R or CD-RW can hold.

While there are many different Dvd formats the choice of which format you use is entirely dependant on the usages you have for the DVD itself. Dvd formats have even begun to encompass high definition discs as well.

While Blu-Ray disc do not carry the DVD label, they are, for all intent and purposes a DVD disc. There was also a flirtation with a product called HD-DVD disc, this was more similar to Blu-Rays disk rather than DVD discs, however due to Blu-Ray disc's popularity the HD-DVD disc program was scraped.
